about

This is the second album for Broodhollow – many of the thematic and character motifs were established in the first album, Curious Little Thing. Not to say that this album requires the first, but, just like the ongoing story, they build off of each other.

The art in Angleworm really takes a turn – the blinding white backgrounds sit just as ominous and shroud the story in just as much mystery as the darkness seen in Curious Little Thing. A different kind of obscuration. I tried to write with this in mind, drawing on some minimalist ideas while maintaining the funny, quirky and unnerving core that, to me, is Broodhollow. I worked to weave a drone throughout all the pieces, a bit of sound design that evokes something insectile and menacing. I'll refer to it throughout these notes as 'The Lure', and represents the growing call of the other.

This album exists in a strange liminal space. It's somewhere between program music (a musical illustration of a narrative) and soundtrack (music underscoring or accompanying visuals), with a few dashes of period-pieces thrown in for good measure. We cover a lot of stylistic ground, from well-meaning small town bands to modern soundtrack composing. It's difficult to write directly “scary” music when you're not scoring to picture, and without resorting to cliches. It's even more difficult to represent the kind of slowly building, dawning-realization-horror that Kris does so well. I've done my best to create a backing track to the story, and to do Broodhollow justice. There are some pieces here that are discordant, chaotic and that you may find unpleasant.
They're supposed to be.

Just one final note from me – this album should have been finished years ago. I can only apologize for the wait, and beg your forgiveness.
